3/5 ★ – thetylerpwift's review of Destiny 2: Beyond Light.

Prefacing this review, I have loved Destiny since D1 Alpha. Played every expansion, have been IN it even in the biggest content droughts, lookin at you D2 Y1. And I say that to tell you that I’m invested in the lore and the campaigns and the PvP and everything. Beyond Light’s campaign had the potential to be the best story in Destiny 2. Bringing back a character we haven’t seen since D1 Campaign 1 was so exciting for me. I couldn’t wait. Not to mention them showing off the Dark Fireteam with the Stranger, Eris Morn and Drifter in the trailer, I was beside myself with excitement. However this campaign rarely lived up to the hype I anticipated. The Dark Fireteam, which should’ve been easily the coolest thing ever, just ended up sitting around a campfire on Europa for the ENTIRE campaign. Eramis could’ve been a really Harrowing villain with really cool motivations but she wasn’t. Her 4 lieutenants were really fun missions, that became Empire Hunts rewarding a cool exotic and the Technocrat delivering one of the most fun AND challenging boss battles in a while for Destiny. Of course now our light level is so high they’re all push overs. BUT one thing this expansion gave us is the Darkness subclass: Stasis. Stasis is super freaking fun. It’s so satisfying to freeze and then shatter enemies and just dominate any combat encounter. However, the fullness of that Stasis potential is locked behind hours of post campaign missions to get the most fun parts of these subclasses. A lot of people I knew who tried beyond light never even attempted to play the Born in Darkness quests because why bother? If you didn’t know that you get your grenades and aspects/fragments from it why would you try? It was a fun expansion, but it wasn’t all it could’ve been. Here’s hoping Witch Queen tomorrow can deliver on the hype!
