3.5/5 ★ – tommytoe's review of Dying Light.
First of all, I have to say that I'm not the biggest fan of zombie games.
I've played Dead Island in the past, but never managed to get through the complete game. I was a bit reluctant to try Dying Light, but it provided a better game then I hoped for.
As Dying Light is created by the same studio who made Dead Island, you can see a lot of similarities. For people who only played Dead Island so far, I would tell them that Dying Light is definitely an upgrade. Both gameplay as story wise. The free running that is a central part of the game is fun, smooth and the moment you get the hang of it, makes you fly across the map. Combat is okay, depending on your preferences, you can go all in, or go for a more evading approach towards the zombie horde.
The main story is largely okay. There is definitely a sense of urgency, though it is a bit broken when you as a player decides to go for smaller side missions instead. The characters are appealing and some have a bigger backstory then you'll suspect from the first introduction.
Besides the positive points, there are some smaller issues. Personally, I only used half of the skills i earned throughout the game. I couldn't bother with the rest as they didn't seem interesting to engage with. Next there where a couple of sequences in the game that made me felt lost. Most of the time the game leads you fairly well towards your target, bot at these exact parts it was the total opposite. Paths sometimes where not clear and this way I even landed outside of the playable area once.
Minor spoiler: If the game never introduces a quick time event. Then it should not introduce it in the final boss battle. I'm terrible at these and so I had to try this part over and over until this ultimate ending of the game totally lost all its appeal to me. Please don't do this.
Overall, I felt Dying Light was a fun game to play and I'm looking forward to its sequel Dying Light 2.
