2/5 ★ – treycorcoran's review of The Callisto Protocol.
Very easily one of the worst games I’ve played in a while. To start off there is little to no variety between enemies I felt like I was literally doing the same thing over and over again for a little over 10 hours. When it comes to in game exploration well let me tell you “Black Iron” is one of the most boring settings I’ve ever been placed in a game. Nothing in this game came as a surprise after about the 2nd chapter and by that point you’ve literally almost encountered every type of enemy variant in the game except for “The Blind” which felt like they were placed in the game to only slow the pacing down to extend how long the game was, and the “Two Headed Brute” which I guess Striking Distance needed something to add to give you some sort of challenge since there is technically only one boss fight in the game. The downside of the first encounter with this enemy is you can kinda tell something is coming because when you’re on the elevator you’re loaded up with ammo before the non challenging bullet sponge comes at you. Oh also it takes little to no skill level to dodge enemy attacks. Literally just hold left or right on the stick and it will do it for you. The combat is very simplistic and the only thing in my opinion it has going for it is when you spam right trigger it occasionally goes into a finishing animation that has pretty decent dismemberment and ruggedness to it. Weapon variety is bleh, and the glove you take off of the guard in the beginning is kinda cool but you can only do so little with it. The best I can describe the glove is for you to imagine having the Jedi force but you can only throw shit with it. Yeah…. Kinda boring. The characters are whatever honestly. I mean for me I didn’t really develop any sort of connection to either character Dani or Jacob. Story wise the big reveal at the end is your very generic and cliche “ This is for the next step of human evolution” I mean there’s a ton of reasons why I don’t like this game and I could go on and on and on…… A couple positives for me were the detail and lighting are very good in the game and the interior design of rooms gave off a very chilling feeling. The art direction is pretty amazing but unfortunately it’s hard to get immersed into a survival action horror game when most of the jump scares and story line plots are very predictable. Hopefully Striking Distances’ next game can be more creative and unique.
