3.5/5 ★ – ukefish's review of GRIS.

Gris feels like a very simple yet solid metroidvania. I say simple because it doesn't have the sprawling map of other metroidvanias, but what it does have is a similar progression of discovering new abilities that will help you get through the platforming of the subsequent zone, as well as reach optional objectives in previous areas. However, its the art and music of Gris that are what really make this game stand out. Each landscape is a beautiful painting which comes more and more to life as you progress through the game and is accompanied by a melody that enhances the visuals further. Gris is not a very long game, as I completed it in about 2.5 hours. While I do wish the game were a bit longer, I do think there is something to be said about moving on before the level's unique mechanic lost its novelty or became monotonous. It felt at times as though the game was trying to convey a message to the player, but whatever that message was I didn't quite understand. I'm sure someone out there smarter than me will find that message and connect with this game deeper than I did. Still, would recommend the game to anyone with a free afternoon and a love of art.
