The LEGO Movie Videogame (2014) – PS3/PS4 Review
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
The LEGO Movie Videogame is a fun, lighthearted adventure that captures the charm and humor of The LEGO Movie while delivering the classic gameplay fans expect from LEGO titles. Though it doesn’t reinvent the formula, it’s an enjoyable experience for players of all ages.
The game closely follows the events of the movie, putting players in the role of Emmet and a wide cast of characters as they embark on a journey to stop Lord Business. The cutscenes are taken directly from the film, keeping the humor intact, though this also means the story feels more rigid compared to other LEGO games.
Gameplay sticks to the tried-and-true LEGO formula—smashing objects, solving puzzles, and collecting studs. What makes this entry unique is the use of “Master Builders,” allowing certain characters to construct large objects from scattered LEGO pieces. Emmet, as an ordinary builder, must follow blueprints instead, adding a fun contrast. The levels are well-designed, with a good mix of platforming, combat, and puzzle-solving.
Visually, the game looks great, especially on PS4, with colorful environments that faithfully recreate the movie’s aesthetic. However, the camera can sometimes be awkward, and the gameplay doesn’t feel as polished as other LEGO titles like LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. Additionally, the lack of voice acting outside of movie clips makes interactions feel a little less dynamic.
Despite some minor issues, The LEGO Movie Videogame is a solid, entertaining adaptation that fans of both the film and LEGO games will enjoy. While it may not be the best in the series, it still offers plenty of creative fun, humor, and engaging gameplay.
