2.5/5 ★ – vass's review of Prison Break: The Conspiracy.
Talk about a repetitive game! Sheesh...
Honestly, let me get the good things about "Prison Break: The Conspiracy" out the way first since they're minimal...but right off the bat I gotta say the camera movement was SMOOTH. For a game that came out in 2008 or something, there were minimal technical issues which was shocking. There were no game breaking bugs, and it was super polished in that regard. at least for me.
My biggest positive about this game was the enemy AI. I was so pleased with how genuinely on point it was. Enemies were timed properly to move when the player reached certain points, and they all had predictable walk cycles which was great. If you ran in stealth only areas, but didn't get caught immeditately, they'd walk over to your last known position and investigate the area. The detection AI and UI was solid too. I feel like lots of games from this era like "Assassin's Creed" or "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (big hitters compared to this game I know, but bear with me lol), didn't have good enemy detection AI, if at all, so it was refreshing to see one actually work in a game from this era. It proved that it was possible for it's time.
Now for the negatives...the story was okay but slightly boring and repetitive at times. Sometimes it got bad, but for a completely separate story from the show, I think it had SOME interesting aspects conceptually, but it did feel super rushed and padded with a whole lot of fluff in game. The entire time it felt like I was just grabbing things or setting things up for the future. I was doing the same two mechanics over and over which consisted of lockpicking and unscrewing things and doors all while stealthing and climbing. Almost every single level was utilizing those four things over and over for around 6 hours.
As someone who hasn't seen this show since I was a kid, some memories did come back to me, which was nice. But this was a semi new story with a new protagonist which isn't true to the show. Instead of playing as Michael Schofield, you play as some random guy trying to catch them in the act. Then later, you discover you were framed by the company you work for....blah blah blah.
I hardly ever got to see the two main characters of the show, I saw more of the side characters if anything which sucked. Also, SPOILER...at the end, the game doesn't even have a cutscene of all of us escaping together. WHICH WAS LAME. It just abruptly ended with the main character speaking form a voice recorder saying he was dead??? I don't even know but it didn't make any sense :P
The stealth was very flat at times, it just consisted of hiding and moving behind barriers. I think the game would have benefited from knock-out mechanics? I don't know, I lowkey wish that would have been included, regardless of whether it fits narratively.
Fuck those quick-time events. They were so fast it was impossible to complete them without memorizing the sequence after dying five times. Don't even get me started on the combat, there were absolutely no indicators for ANYTHING. It was incredibly janky, and most of the time I just button-mashed until I could land a hit.
I can't say I reccommend the game to anyone for the quality of the game lol, but rather if you are someone who likes shitty games and movie/show spin offs oh boy is "Prison Break: The Conspiracy" for you!
