2.5/5 ★ – veronica_p's review of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider.
This dlc has always felt like there was something off about it but I never knew how to express it beyond the lack of continuity for the previous expansions from the first game.
The Knife of Dunwall and The Brigmore Witches were all about Daud coming to the realization that he cannot continue to hold onto his anger towards The Outsider for killing the Empress. Instead he recognizes that ultimately it is his own actions that have caused him to be where he is, not the power of the Outsider. It may have helped him, but he could do as much evil as he can do good on his own. I don’t know how much I can express that agency is a core tenet of the game, whether you play low chaos or high chaos.
So... Death of the Outsider decides to shit all over that idea and say actually why don’t we bring back that lack of accountability and blame it on the Outsider again. I don’t even love Daud all that much but to see such a regression of a character that I spent hours working towards redemption, feels like absolute nonsense to me. Not to mention, *spoilers* how his death feels literally so inconsequential and is brushed over. WE DONT EVEN GET TO SEE IT instead we just get an audio log to Billie that’s like if you hear this I’m dead go kill the Outsider thanks✌️. THIS IS THE SAME CHARACTER WE PLAYED AS FOR TWO EXPANSION PACKS and he flops over like a fish for a step minute audio log.
It was nice to be able to see him in the Void and he does have a slight change of heart at the end if you choose non lethal elimination but I don’t think we needed a dlc to bring us back to where the last one had literally concluded.
It would have been so nice to play as Billie because even if I thought her role was quite small in the first game, I thought it would be neat to play as her. Unfortunately she did not get the game she should have a role in and instead is left to deal with Daud’s mess instead.
I could go on about the poor choice to leave out the chaos system and all that but I’m quite tired of it. I tell everyone that Dishonored is my favorite game but I assuredly make sure to also tell them to not bother with this dlc.
