3/5 ★ – voorgo's review of Salt and Sacrifice.
Salt and Sacrifice on paper should be a great game. And at first you might be mistaken. Our first 3 hours we were blown away. But by hour 15… not so much.
If you’ve done any research into this game you know it’s a 2D soulslike through and through. They do a good job with that. It’s tough, has fun RPG elements, and drives home it’s dark atmosphere. You might have also learned that this game is a monster hunter-like too. That’s as weird as it sounds. You’ll hunt down “mages” for their parts to create armor and weapons. The builds that ensue are actually one of the better parts of the game.
Finally, it’s last genre, is that of a metroidvania. Unfortunately, three was one too many. Take out one of the others and you’d be fine, but together it’s too much. The metroidvania aspect brings issues with exploration that are essentially unforgivable. No map, no fast travel, and really finicky platforming. It’s disappointing that these design choices were made, because it takes what could work and brings it down too far to recommend.
Some people will enjoy it. But to me, it’s just okay.
