4/5 ★ – yopyop3000's review of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
Played on PS2 on Expert
This games marks the trade off from Harmonix to Neversoft and thus the beginning of a slow decline in quality in the series. The vibes and aesthetic are noticeably less enjoyable compared to GH 1 and 2 in this one. The character models for the singer and drummer are quite ugly, especially for the ps2. Even the loading screen text lacks the charm of the original games.
This game does have Tom Morello which is cool. You get to battle him in an original jam Tom made the game which is very cool. The problem is that the only way to play this is in this battle mode for the campaign which has you sending attacks at each other that makes you and tom fuck up the song so you can’t even hear the awesomeness tom created for the game!!
The song selection for this game is strong with the exception of the bonus tracks which pale in comparison to the harmonix guitar hero’s. Most of the bonus tracks range from underwhelming to bad with the exception of a handful of tunes. This game also has some of the most fun charts to play on expert for the entire series (looking at you My Name Is Jonas and Cliffs of Dover). This game is mostly comprised of master tracks which is a step in the right direction for the series, while I still appreciate the covers of the old games.
This game is also the hardest in the series. With tracks like raining blood, devil went down to Georgia and through the fire and flames being particularly punishing. I appreciate the bump in difficulty but it bums me out that I can’t beat every track on expert.
Also it is crazy that there are exclusive songs buried in the co-op campaign mode. I almost admire that but it is also pretty dumb and does a bad job of letting you know that.
