4/5 ★ – yotsuben's review of Apex Legends.

This is my current "forever" game. Before this it was PUBG, before that it was Overwatch, and before even that was Team Fortress 2. You can probably find some throughlines there, like team-based shooting, interesting gunplay, or the Source engine and game-jank similar to it. I'm fortunate enough to have friends that also play so I can always easily squad up, which probably helps me to keep up with it (and this same group of friends applies to each of the games listed above). It's Respawn: their gunplay is tight and feels punchy, which makes it easy to say "just one more game." The devs have attempted to craft a story that is progressing throughout the consecutive seasons, and while it doesn't always land, I do enjoy hearing the banter that automatically plays alter over time to reflect the character's changing relationships. While the monetization is egregious in its pricing, it doesn't effect moment-to-moment gameplay which lets me ignore it fairly easily (although I have spent money on the battle pass, which if completed hands you enough currency to buy the next battle pass as per the norm). A treadmill, yes, but one I would be doing anyway since I'm playing with friends, so.
