4.5/5 ★ – yungraft's review of Days Gone.
This game has a real super power. In a time where zombies games were releasing at a super high rate, Days Gone has managed to do something to me that I've never felt in a game setting like this one. It managed to actually instill fear & anxiety in me. This is a game that deserves way more attention & love than it received.
The storyline was great, Sam Witwer was perfect as Deacon St. John. The voice acting & motion capture were so damn good. Every character you meet has interesting storylines that kept me hooked into the narrative. Now, I do wish the pacing was better throughout the whole game. Near the end, it felt like every mission became "go here, kill horde, repeat".
I also mentioned pacing because, although not completely game breaking, I found the constant fade to black after each cutscene sort of took me out of the experience. Once you start paying attention to it, it's tough to stop noticing it. I'm sure that was done to save resources so it's not affecting my score on this otherwise amazing video game.
I actually liked the exploring and the looting. I found myself checking every building and vehicle for more resources to create my loadouts, focusing mainly on explosives. The amount of zombies you can encounter through the Infestations or the Hordes is fantastic. Those encounters made me feel on edge, terrified and most of all outnumbered. The hordes could be up to what felt like thousands of freakers (their version of zombies), all sprinting at you trying to kill you.
I completed the game on Normal difficulty and it felt fair, but still challenging at parts. I can see myself picking this game up again and raising the difficulty, or even messing around on NG+. By the end of my 40 hr. playthrough, I felt satisfied with my experience. I highly recommend giving this game a shot. There's no other feeling like melting down freakers on a souped up steel horse. 9/10 would do it all over again!
